Dear future Digital Writer,
I love when people say, “I can do this on my own.”
Because if you think you can, then you should.
The problem is, a lot of people say, “I can do this on my own,” but don’t realize, if they could, they would have done it already.
So, if you’re sitting there thinking, “Thanks Charlie. I think I’ve got it from here,” by all means.
But, just to give you a little parting wisdom… these are 30 obstacles you’re going to run into.
And instead of letting me just tell you the answers, leveling-up your knowledge, and helping you skip all of them, you’re going to “pay” for them in:
- Time: It’s going to take you a certain number of hours to figure out how to overcome each of these obstacles “on your own.”
- Headspace: It’s going to consume a lot of mental bandwidth thinking about how to overcome each of these obstacles “on your own.”
- Emotional Frustration: And the longer it takes to overcome any one of these obstacles, the more it’s going to frustrate you, and the more likely it will be that you’ll just decide to give up—because growth (in any area of life) is always harder when you try to figure it out “on your own.”
So, just a little heads up, here are 30 obstacles you’re going to run into on your digital writing journey—all of which I can help you solve (effortlessly!):
- “I don’t know what to write about.”
- “I have so many ideas, I don’t know where to start or which one to write first.”
- “I want to start writing but I’m afraid of my employer seeing my writing and getting upset (or firing me!).”
- “I don’t know what my niche is.”
- “I don’t have any fancy credibility for the topic I want to write about.”
- “I’m hesitant to put myself out there because I don’t want people to disagree with me.”
- “I don’t want to share any half-baked ideas, I want to wait until they are perfect before hitting publish.”
- “I don’t think there’s any audience for the types of things I want to write.”
- “I don’t think my audience exists on [XYZ] platform.”
- “I want people to read my writing but I don’t want to have to write clickbait headlines or post platitudes people have heard a million times before.”
- “I don’t think I have anything valuable to share.”
- “I've already written a piece on the topic I want to write about and don’t know how to write about that topic again without sounding repetitive.”
- “I want to start writing online but I have no desire to be Internet famous or become an influencer.”
- “There are already a lot of other people who write about the topics I do, and I don’t see how I have anything new or helpful to contribute to the conversation.”
- “I fell out of my daily writing habit and I don’t know how to re-start it.”
- “I want to write more, but I have a lot going on at work, at home, etc., and don’t have very much time.”
- “I keep posting content but nothing is performing well and I don’t know what to do.”
- “My content that does perform well isn’t what I want to write about long term, so I feel stuck.”
- “I am already known for writing about a specific topic and I’m afraid if I start writing about something else I’m going to lose my entire following and all the work I’ve done up to this point will be for nothing.”
- “I feel like I’m writing really valuable content but nobody seems to be reading and it’s frustrating me.”
- “I don’t know how to write headlines people want to click on without sounding like a cheesy copywriter.”
- “I don’t know how to format my writing to keep up with all these new digital formats.”
- “I don’t know how to republish my content across multiple platforms without breaking the rules.”
- “I don’t know how to launch a weekly newsletter and start transitioning my social audience over to an owned platform.”
- “I don’t know how to turn everything I’m writing about for free into a paid digital product that people would be willing to buy online.”
- “I don’t know all the different ways I can monetize my writing, or the different career paths available to me in the digital age.”
- “I don’t know how to connect my social audience to a newsletter to a digital product like an eBook or online course I want to sell.”
- “I want to use writing to position myself as a thought leader in my industry and unlock other career opportunities but I don’t know the roadmap for getting there.”
- “I want to connect with other likeminded thinkers, writers, and creators but I haven’t found a welcoming community where I can meet those types of people—especially others who are beginners like I am.”
- “I want to be part of The Creator Economy, I want to take control over my future, I want to unlock more financial upside for myself (either as a side hustle or make a career change), and I know I am capable of getting there if I put the work in—I just don’t know where to start.”
How do I know you’re going to run into these 30 obstacles (and many more)? Because both myself, and all my clients have run into them. Sometimes over and over again.
They ALL walked in with this same laundry list of questions, fears, and demoralizing faulty beliefs—and they walked out the other side going, “Wow! That wasn’t as hard or as scary as I thought it would be!”

P.S… If you’re reading this and thinking: “Ah, I’ll wait until next year to start writing, then will be the perfect time…”
Please keep this in mind: There will never be a perfect time to start writing. For some reason, we always think we’ll be less busy in the future. And when that future comes, we find we are still just as busy.
So we put it off, again.
And again.
And again.
Until finally we look up years later only to recognize we never got started.
Don’t let that happen to you.
Commit to finally start writing today—your future self will thank you.
